LATEST STORIES.... AUSTRALIA'S MACHINE SAFETY STANDARD OPEN FOR COMMENT The heart of Australia’s number one machine safety standard, AS4024.1, has been reviewed and is open for public comment until 16 December. Highlights of the draft changes include:
Because it incorporates 26 international standards, the standard is roughly triple the size of the 1996 document. To make it manageable and minimise cost, the proposed standard will be sold in an easily updated ring binder. The first section, Part 1000, covers the basics that apply to all users, while Part 2000 deals with specific situations. Finally, Part 3000 will house future machine-specific standards. New content includes the concept of fault exclusion for and the requirement for validation of control measures by analysis. There are also new provisions for controls and displays that direct where they should be installed, how they look and how they are used. Despite the changes, the core principles of AS4024.1 remain, including the well-used category selection chart. The draft of Part 1000 is online at www.standards.com.au
