WORK CHRISTMAS PARTY DO'S AND DON'TS

Badly organised Christmas functions can be a legal minefield. On the other hand, well-run parties are a great way for the team to celebrate the year’s work and unwind.

According to law firm, Norman Waterhouse, a little common sense goes a long way towards limiting any potential liability and making sure a good time is had by all. To help you plan, Norman Waterhouse compiled this handy list of do’s and don’ts:

Do

  • Have a clear start and finish time for your function
  • Monitor any individual alcohol excesses
  • Ensure food is provided, and (hopefully) eaten, if alcohol is provided
  • Provide cab charge vouchers or other safe transport for employees leaving the function
  • Instruct managers, supervisors and/or owners of the business to keep an eye out for inappropriate behaviour by employees towards others
  • If “Kris Kringles” are arranged, advise employees to keep their gifts appropriate. Ask them to be aware of cultural, religious or other sensitivities of the recipients of the gifts and others who may see them

Don’t

  • Serve alcohol to staff aged under 18
  • Continue serving alcohol to someone who appears to be intoxicated
  • Continue to provide drinks after the designated finish time
  • Allow intoxicated people to drive
  • Require employees to sit on Santa’s knee to receive their Christmas gift, or kiss Santa, or “kiss the boss”
  • Place mistletoe anywhere
  • Allow inappropriate tomfoolery or conduct towards others
